As we headed toward Monument Valley Viola was so excited to start a new day of vacation.
We were certainly glad that we had sprung for a compact SUV over a compact car. The dirt road that wound through the buttes and mesas of Monument Valley was anything but smooth.
We made a few pit stops along the way including potty breaks and buying a fantastic turquoise necklace from a Navajo lacy named Daisy on the side of the road.
We were able to get one photo of just the two of us while Viola took a nap in the car. Don't worry we had our eyes on her the whole time.
Brian was especially excited to be in Monument Valley, he recalled working a puzzle of this view many times as a youth.
As we drove through the Navajo Nation we realized that you can just park your house anywhere. These two families picked very nice spots.
Next stop. The Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Park. The painted desert was not very impressive at dusk but the petrified wood was really cool.
There are very strict rules about not removing any of this petrified wood from the park and it was every where. But we were able to find a few small pieces later as gravel in a parking lot.
